The Challenge
Airport duty-free retail operates under strict regulatory requirements — and the existing POS couldn't meet them. It had no way to track flight information, no concept of tariff-code restrictions, no enforcement of passport-based purchase limits, and no proper audit trail. In a duty-free environment, those aren't nice-to-haves: they're the difference between passing an audit and committing a violation.
Every sale that couldn't be properly tracked or limited was a compliance risk, and the manual gaps left the operation exposed.
The Approach
The enhancement built the regulatory rules directly into the system, so compliance became automatic rather than dependent on staff vigilance.
- A flight-information tracking module, tying purchases to flight data as duty-free rules require.
- A tariff-code system with configurable purchase limits by passport type, enforcing the right caps for the right travellers automatically.
- Stock-overview reports for audit documentation, so the evidence auditors need is produced by the system instead of assembled by hand.
- A mandatory double-verification reconciliation workflow, building a checkpoint into the process so figures are confirmed, not assumed.
The Result
The system is now highly reliable in a compliance-critical environment — passing audits and preventing violations automatically. Purchase limits enforce themselves, flight and tariff data are captured as part of every relevant sale, audit reports are ready on demand, and the double-verification step catches discrepancies before they become problems. Compliance shifted from a manual worry to a built-in guarantee.
